Lauren Liv: Founder of Ghetto Dreams

by Ryan Leutz

In the ever-evolving world of streetwear, "Ghetto Dreams" distinguishes itself with a unique fusion of Chicano art, religious iconography, and personal experiences. Founded by Lauren Liv in 2019, the brand quickly gained a following in key markets like New York, California, and Texas, establishing itself through collaborations and sales within the streetwear community.
“Man, I've always been into clothes since I was a kid. I just fell in love with fashion,” Lauren said when asked about her brand’s journey.
Taking inspiration from her family's roots in Dallas and the vibrant Chicano art scene, Lauren Liv’s "Ghetto Dreams" features bold and colorful graphics of Chicano iconography. It marries religious imagery and Chicano art styles and mediums, connoting not only a sense of rebellion, but also a unity with those who share similar heritage and familial background.
“When I was a child, my mom and I went to Big T in Oak Cliff, Dallas, Texas every Sunday.  It was almost like a ritual,” says Lauren, on her upbringing’s influence on the brand.
“I do a lot of things that are influenced by airbrush art because I saw a guy who did personalized airbrush tees at Big T and I liked that you could build your own. Many people connect my stuff to plaza or bootleg vibes, but that's the point; it's all from my upbringing.”
The artwork in "Ghetto Dreams" continues to captivate with its vibrant and relatable imagery, reflecting the community it represents. The bold and large graphics of "Ghetto Dreams" often feature imagery of Catholic Saints, skillfully blending religious symbolism with the attitude and aesthetic of Chicano tattoo art in particular.
“I come from a family of hustlers, so some of my family has been in and out of prison,” Lauren began. “Half of my family is all tatted up with Chicano art, so that’s why I’m all tatted up, you know? It’s what I saw growing up!” she said with a smile.
“Ghetto Dreams” has garnered recognition from influencers in the music industry through working and collaborating with artists such as Peso Peso, Mexican OT, and Sauce Walka, who share a connection with the brand as fellow Texans.  Lauren continues to embrace controversial, edgy, and relatable themes in her designs and her creative vision and inspirations are not lost on her fellow creatives.
With potential pop-up events planned in Los Angeles, New York, and Texas and more collections on the way, "Ghetto Dreams" is poised for continued success. Rooted in a clear vision and a steadfast commitment to its community, the brand is one to keep an eye on in the dynamic realm of streetwear.
