Designer Spotlight: Luxenburg

Designer Spotlight: Luxenburg

by Ryan Leutz

Luxenburg, founded by Braedy Luxenburg, draws inspiration from medieval art and motifs present in his European ancestry. The brand, which began its first collection in 2022 after years of meticulous planning, is based in New York City, with Luxenburg hailing from Ohio. Luxenburg's clothing is a blend of medieval influences and modern expression, offering a unique take on medieval pieces in the modern age. In an interview with Braedy Luxenburg, we spoke about the brand's origins and creative vision.

[Where are you from?]

- Canton, Ohio originally, We're now based in NYC

[What's the origin story of your brand?]

- Reflecting on the origin of Luxenburg, the brand's evolution was a serendipitous journey of increasing complexity in both garment design and artistic reference. My early days at Kent State Fashion School saw me wholesaling a graphic tee brand to art museums, all while immersing myself in art history classes.

Studying in Florence, Italy, deepened my appreciation for the region's rich history and art, which heavily influenced my senior thesis. I then was able to learn and hone my craft across many prestigious NYC fashion houses. Throughout my explorations of various brand ideas, l often felt uncertain-until I conceived Luxenburg. At that moment, I knew this was the brand I could see myself growing with for a lifetime.

[Why do you make what you make?]

- We aim to reimagine an aesthetic that once represented an obsession with prayer and conformity. Luxenburg shifts these symbols to represent an obsession with creating your own identity and values.

[How do you make what you make?]

- I draw inspiration from everyday experiences in my life and tie it in with medieval/historical silhouettes, fabrications, motifs, and coloration. Designing for Luxenburg is a stream of consciousness.

[What's the best part of running your brand?]

- The excitement of seeing how people infuse their own individuality into the garments in styling as well as seeing the garments in different storefronts/spaces at the mercy of others' curation. Very fulfilling.

[What's the worst part of running your brand?]

- The time draw, it is genuinely non-stop. Even when you think you finally have a moment to relax.

[What do you want people to know about you or your brand?]

- Take time each week to hang out with people that you're happy to be around. It's important.
