While Leonardo da Vinci is mostly know for the Mona Lisa, he wasn’t just a painter. He was an architect, sculptor, engineer, philosopher and simply put a genius and polymath. He invented the tank, parachute, and the helicopter. da Vinci was a jack of all trades and a master of them as well.

“The Vitruvian Man” is personally my favorite work from him. Simple and powerful at the same time. The drawing is simply a sketch of a naked man with four arms and four legs inside a circle and square. Although it may seem simple at first, the sketch is very multidimensional. It is based in the ideas from an Ancient Roman architect named Vitruvius. Vitruvius believed that just like how everything inside a building is connected, so is the human body.

da Vinci took this idea one step further with his sketch. He believed everything in the world is connected, and that there was a divine connection between the human body and the universe. He also believed there was geometric perfection within the human body. Check the slides for notes taken directly from the Vitruvian Man.

Personally I don’t think there is one “perfect” body. I believe the bodies we each individually have are perfect and we should treat them as such. Nevertheless, the ideas behind the Vitruvian Man are still powerful and significant.
